How to choose an AI marking tool for IGCSE
The best AI marking tool for IGCSE is the one that marks your students' handwritten scripts closely to how your department would, applies mark scheme conventions such as M/A dependency and the list rule, gives students useful feedback, and handles student data properly. Vendor accuracy claims can't tell you that. A ten-script test on your own papers can. Use the twelve-point checklist below to shortlist tools, then run the test.
We make one of these tools, The Learning Mate. This checklist is written so you can apply it to any vendor, including us.
The 12-point checklist
Marking quality
- Does it read handwriting, including maths working? Method marks depend on working, not just the final answer.
- Does it apply IGCSE conventions? Look for M/A/B dependency, follow through, ecf, the list rule, contradictions and "reject" answers. See IGCSE mark scheme abbreviations.
- Does it mark per question part and show its reasoning? A total with no explanation tells students nothing about where they lost marks.
- How does it handle levels-marked writing? It should place each answer in a level, with quoted evidence and feedback.
Teacher control
- Can teachers change any mark and choose when results are released? You should stay in control of what students see.
- Can you use your own mark scheme and rubric? You need control over what students are marked against.
Evidence
- How was accuracy measured? Ask about the sample size, subjects, handwritten vs typed scripts, what was compared, and what "accuracy" means: exact match, within one mark, or within tolerance. A single headline percentage with no method isn't evidence.
- Can you try it on your own scripts before paying? A free trial on real work beats a demo on the vendor's examples.
Data and compliance
- Where is data stored and processed, and is student work used for training? Get the answers in writing. Use our GDPR checklist.
- Will it sign a data processing agreement with your school?
Workflow and cost
- Does it fit how you work? Check phone uploads, student self-upload, Google Classroom or your platform, exports, and student and parent feedback.
- What does a full class set cost? Pricing is often per script or per page. Work out the cost of one mock season for one teacher, then for the department.
The 10-script test (one afternoon)
This test tells you more than any brochure.
- Choose one paper your department has already marked, ideally a recent mock.
- Pick ten scripts across the ability range: two strong, two borderline, two weak, one with very untidy handwriting, one with diagrams or graphs, and two typical.
- Run them through each shortlisted tool with the same mark scheme.
- Compare question by question with your department's moderated marks, not just the totals. Totals hide errors that cancel each other out.
- Record three numbers per tool:
- Exact agreement: the percentage of question parts where the tool matched your mark.
- Agreement within tolerance: for example within 1 mark on point-marked questions.
- Time saved: how long the tool took compared with marking the ten scripts by hand.
- Note the failure types. Did it miss working, misread handwriting, ignore the list rule, or misjudge levels?
Exact agreement is the number that matters most. For context, compare it with how often two teachers in your department agree on the same scripts.
Red flags
- Accuracy claims with no method behind them.
- No way to see why a mark was given.
- Vague answers about where data goes, or whether it trains models.
- Pricing you can only discover after a sales call, for a single teacher.
How The Learning Mate answers the checklist
For transparency, here's how we answer, so you can check it in a trial:
| # | Our answer |
|---|---|
| 1 | Reads handwritten and typed work, including maths working, from photos or PDFs. |
| 2–3 | Marks each question and part against your mark scheme, with reasoning and student feedback. |
| 4 | Custom criteria for extended writing, each with a mark, evaluation and feedback. |
| 5 | Every mark and comment is editable, and results reach students when you publish them. |
| 6 | Use your own exam paper and mark scheme, or approve an AI-drafted scheme. |
| 7 | Across more than 500,000 IGCSE papers marked by both AI and teachers over the past year, the AI matched the final reviewed mark on more than 97% of questions, more often than manual marking. See the method, or run the 10-script test above. |
| 8 | Try one paper free, with no account, at thelearningmate.com/trial. |
| 9 | Student work is stored and processed in the EU. Customer data isn't used to train general-purpose AI models. See our GDPR checklist. |

FAQ
What is the best AI marking tool for IGCSE?
The one that agrees most closely with your department's marking on your own scripts, saves the most time, and meets your data protection requirements. Run a ten-script test on a recent mock to find out.
How do I test an AI marking tool's accuracy?
Run ten already-moderated scripts through it with the same mark scheme. Compare question by question, and record exact agreement, agreement within tolerance, and how much time it saved.
Can AI marking tools mark IGCSE-style papers?
Yes. They mark answers against the mark scheme you provide, including your own mocks and classroom assessments.
How much does AI marking cost?
Pricing varies by vendor and is often per script, page or assessment. Work out the cost of one teacher's mock season and compare like for like.
