How to mark IGCSE First Language English 0500 with levels

By The Learning Mate team · Updated · 5 min read

IGCSE First Language English writing is marked with levels, not points. Read the whole response, choose the level whose descriptor best fits it overall, then place the mark within that level according to how convincingly the response meets it. Cambridge's mark schemes say the level descriptors are general guidance, "not hurdle statements". One weakness doesn't cap a response that otherwise fits a higher level.

This guide covers the 2024–2026 syllabus (0500, and 0990 for 9–1 grading) and what changes from 2027.

How is 0500 assessed (2024–2026)?

ComponentDurationMarksWeighting
Paper 1 Reading (compulsory)2 h8050%
Either Paper 2 Directed Writing and Composition2 h8050%
Or Component 3 Coursework Portfolio (internally assessed, externally moderated)—8050%
Component 4 Speaking and Listening (optional, separately endorsed 1–5)~10–12 min40—

What are the assessment objectives?

Reading:

  • R1 Explicit meanings.
  • R2 Implicit meanings and attitudes.
  • R3 Analyse, evaluate and develop facts, ideas and opinions.
  • R4 How writers achieve effects.
  • R5 Select and use information for specific purposes.

Writing:

  • W1 Articulate experience and express what is thought, felt and imagined.
  • W2 Organise and structure ideas for deliberate effect.
  • W3 A range of vocabulary and sentence structures.
  • W4 Register appropriate to context.
  • W5 Accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar.

How are Paper 2 marks split?

SectionTotalSplit
Directed Writing4025 for writing (Table A, six levels) + 15 for reading (Table B)
Composition4016 for content and structure + 24 for style and accuracy

A common mistake is to mark Directed Writing as if it were only a writing task. Fifteen of the 40 marks are for reading: how well the student selects, evaluates and develops ideas from the source texts. A fluent response that ignores the texts can't reach the top of Table B.

How to mark with levels: a five-step routine

  1. Read the whole response first. Don't annotate on the first read. Levels judge the response as a whole.
  2. Mark each table separately. For Directed Writing, decide the Table A (writing) level and the Table B (reading) level independently. A student can be strong on one and weak on the other.
  3. Choose the best-fit level. Find the level whose descriptor fits most of the response. A few features from a lower level don't pull it down if the overall fit is higher.
  4. Place the mark within the level. For coursework and speaking, the syllabus describes this rule: if the work convincingly meets the level, give the top mark; if it adequately meets it, the middle; if it just meets it, the bottom. Many departments apply the same logic to Paper 2 for consistency. Check the current mark scheme's own guidance.
  5. Write a one-line justification, for example "Level 5 W: well-structured, varied sentences, occasional lapses in register". It speeds up moderation and gives the student useful feedback.

Meet candidates on their chosen ground

Cambridge mark schemes remind examiners that the indicative content is not prescriptive. Students can interpret a composition title in unexpected ways. If the response is relevant and well written, credit it. Don't penalise a student for not writing the essay you expected.

What changes in the 2027 syllabus?

Cambridge has published a new 0500 syllabus for first assessment in 2027:

  • Paper 1 is restructured into four compulsory questions of 20 marks each.
  • Some assessment objective wording changes, including W2, W4 and the speaking and listening objectives. Cambridge says the knowledge and skills being assessed have not changed.

If your Year 10 students will sit the exam in 2027, start using the new specimen materials for internal assessments this year, so their mock results reflect the format they'll face.

How to keep levels marking consistent across a department

Levels marking is where teachers disagree most. Exam boards handle this with standardisation, and departments can copy the approach:

  • Agree on anchor scripts. Pick one response per level, mark it together, and keep it as a reference.
  • Set a tolerance, for example within 2 marks per 40-mark section. Differences inside the tolerance stand. Differences outside it go to a second marker.
  • Second-mark a sample, weighted towards grade boundaries.

Can AI mark IGCSE English essays?

Yes. The slowest part of English marking is reading 30 handwritten compositions and applying the level descriptors to each one consistently. AI does exactly that: it places each response in a level for each table, quotes the evidence, and writes feedback for the student. It applies the descriptors the same way to the first and the thirtieth script. The exception is coursework that counts towards the qualification, which has its own rules (see the FAQ below).

The Learning Mate does this against your own rubric. You set the criteria, for example Table A and Table B, and each one gets a mark, the evidence behind it, and feedback for the student. You can change any mark before you publish results. For students learning in English as an additional language, feedback can also be written in the student's home language. See feedback for EAL students on IGCSE papers.

FAQ

What does best fit mean in IGCSE English marking?

Choose the level whose descriptor matches the response as a whole, rather than requiring every feature of a level to be present. Cambridge mark schemes say the descriptors are not hurdle statements.

How many marks is 0500 Directed Writing?

40 marks: 25 for writing (Table A) and 15 for reading (Table B), under the 2024–2026 syllabus.

How is the 0500 composition marked?

Out of 40: 16 for content and structure and 24 for style and accuracy.

What is changing in IGCSE First Language English from 2027?

In the new syllabus, Paper 1 has four compulsory questions worth 20 marks each, and some assessment objective wording changes. Cambridge says the skills assessed haven't changed.

Can AI mark the 0500 coursework portfolio?

It can assist. The Cambridge Handbook 2026 says AI must not be the sole or primary means of marking coursework, and a teacher must decide the mark. This applies to coursework only, not to mocks or homework.
